Depending on the model, the number of parts in each set is different. In a locomotive, for example, 443 parts, in a safe — 179, and in small stands only 25. And when creating each part, accuracy is in the first place. Now, a laser is the thickness of a human hair from a whole sheet of plywood according to the drawings, today in the UGEARS workshop there are immediately 100 of them. In 2014, in order to establish fast and economical production, Denis launched a campaign on Kickstarter.

The campaign brought almost unexpected success — they learned about puzzles in Japan, Taiwan, China, orders and proposals for implementation went from there. The Japanese really like that the designers are completely mechanical — they come to life solely thanks to wooden mounts and rubber bands. Conventional toothpicks are used as wooden fasteners, and gum serves as trigger elements.

In a way, this is a truly unique product on the market. Ohrimenko is categorically opposed to UGEARS being compared with LEGO constructors. However, he does not hide that he wants to achieve the same world fame for wooden 3D puzzles.

Designers are designed for people 25-40 years old, they have long been known on the network under the code phrase «toys for adults.» At first glance, it seems that UGEARS designers are a pleasure only for men. But women are keen on modeling. To prove this, the company at the end of last year released a model of a mechanical flower, which quickly gained popularity among women with an “engineering mindset”.

Now the company has prepared about a hundred ideas for new designers — from a telephone directory to a gramophone with wooden plates. It takes up to 8 months to develop one model — that is how many engineers came up with a wooden mechanical safe.

Modular Dice Tower

What is the most important thing in any cool desktop? Immersion in the process. That is why the environment in which you play is so important: the field must be beautiful and comfortable, cards and char-lists must be colorful and original, and the cubes … And the cubes must remain on the table! This is at least.

How many times have you had your neatly thrown dice cheerfully fly off the countertop? UGEARS offers to forget about such a problem once and for all, making the dice throwing process a separate mini-game: for this we offer you the Modular Dice Tower! This is a classic set of four «glasses under the bone» in a new, environmentally friendly and very interesting, performance:

Here is a small and maneuverable Ugears boat that is ready to swing on the waves at any moment … and without leaving the surface of the table! Engineers put wheels with asymmetric axles on this model, so when the tug begins to go, it looks exactly like a ship launched into the water. And this impression is fixed by the almost real sound of a diesel engine — a skillful imitation created by the masters of the brand.

About other features:

• The boat was visually made in the skeleton style, traditional for UGEARS wooden designers: watch gears never get boring;

• The tugboat is completely ready to do its job — with the help of two ropes with hooks you can easily «tow» a small load (like a paper boat) by 2-3 meters;

• The model consists of 169 precisely cut laser-cut parts that fit perfectly together. The assembly is designed for 2-3 hours.

UGEARS wooden mechanical designers have nothing to do with the entertainment we are used to today. Really fall in love with the designer when he falls into your hands. Most likely that is why the startup did not have big sales until the puzzles got to the exhibitions. In the spring of 2014, Denis tried to independently trade designers on St. Andrew’s Descent. He bypassed local sellers, showed them prototypes, but everyone refused to take designers for implementation, although usually models only aroused enthusiasm in people. After several unsuccessful attempts, Ohrimenko decided to try to sell the puzzles himself — he was located there, on Andreevsky. Foreigners, families with children and the whole batch, which the entrepreneur showed to the sellers «flew away» on the same day, began to approach.

To save money, the entrepreneur did not immediately want to assemble parts from wood — first, cardboard was to become the main material. But the cardboard quickly wore out. Denis tried plastic and acrylic — but they did not give the desired result. They found out empirically that material is better than wooden plywood for these purposes not to be found.
